Christmas Jazz

Here’s my latest venture: a poster for a big band christmas concert. As if by coincidence, I happen to play in the band. I’d like to invite everyone in the neighborhood and elsewhere to this event! It will take place in Lund, at LTH:s Kårhus (Gasquesalen i källaren) 25/11 at 4 pm. Welcome!

The bloke posing as a dissatisfied Rudolph the Red-nosed reindeer is Bobbe himself (Robin Petersson), the leader of the band. The guys in the sleigh are Ulrika Orre and Per Svensson, the vocal soloists. The ink drawing:

And this is the colored version. The only thing missing is the informational text at the bottom (where, when & how). It will be added by Rudolf… eh, I mean Bobbe.

I’m not completely satisfied with the colors (in particular the tacky airbrush effects), but I’m a bit short on time, and besides I’m doing it for free…

Bamse #14

Subscribers got Bamse #14 in their mail-boxes today. I was about to behold the end result of three months unusually hard work on my one, and perhaps only, Rune A-story. I was excited like a child on Christmas… just to be utterly disappointed seconds later. The coloring of my art work is eh… uninspired, to put it mildly. Did you ever see a dark-grey cow with pee-yellow patches for instance (p 28). And her name is “Rosengull”! (indicates an entirely different color scheme)

The Middle Ages feel I worked so hard to create, in accordance with Rune’s lovely design sheets, has been corrupted by crazy color combinations. Walls are blue or green, wooden barrels are purple, armor suits are yellow etc. There are far too many classic “donts” like red on red, blue on blue or color hues too close to each other.

I envisioned a more naturalistic looking environment than usual with toned down colors (I thought Rune’s design sheets indicated this). This would have added to the Middle Ages feel and the characters would have stood out more from the bkg. Instead we find this crazy mix of colors that just don’t go together. The choice of colors generally lacks harmony. And what’s boring is that nearly all the foxes’ fur is the usual bright red. If Rune’s design sheets indicated anything it was variation. What’s variated instead is the clothes of the minor characters. To such an extent that the eye actually hurts…

The only thing I’m pleased with when it comes to colors is the cover. Brilliantly composed by Joakim Gunnarsson and drawn by Lars Bällsten, the cover is further lifted by its warm and juicy colors. Why are the colors excellent on the cover and not so excellent on the inside? Because the covers are colored first-hand at the editorial office! These guys know the story and they care about it. Those who color the contents of the magazine work from abroad. They are not 100% familiar with the story and probably don’t give a damn. At least that’s what it looks like.

This indifference makes me unkeen to continue going to such painstaking lengths to produce art work true to the original vision. When it’s not met with similar engagement at the coloring department, it doesn’t seem to be worth it, and I might as well choose the easy way out.

Bonifacius = Bonifatius?

On October 5, Lundaspexarna is going on tour to Linköping to make two unique performances of this spring’s spex-production “Bonifacius” (October 6). As I was flicking through archive material for a current drawing assignment, I came upon this Rune A. sketch of “Bonifatius”, which I found kind of funny. The spex-character Bonifacius is a pope, while the Rune A. character Bonifatius is a beaver. Is there anyone out there who knows in what Bamse-issue Bonifatius appears? What are his personality traits?

Here’s a little teaser panel for you from Bamse #14. Last Christmas I was entrusted to draw a story written by the late Master himself, Rune Andréasson. This was obviously a great honour for me, so I pushed myself to make an effort out of the ordinary, hoping to do justice to Rune’s work. It’s actually two continuous scripts, “Fule Fritte” and “Dorabella och Prins Räv-Rusk”. They treat the subject of bullying in a very classic Rune A. way (reminiscent of stories such as “Kalle Svartskalle” and “En riktig Lucia”). These pages are no doubt among the best pages I ever did for Bamse, and certainly the ones I’m most proud of, and I pray to above that the coloring department did their job as they should. Please take an extra look at Bernt Hanson’s beautiful, beautiful ink lines. His ink originals should be framed on a wall, not stored in some dusty vault…

Bamse Christmas Album #17

I just got my hands on this year’s Christmas Album. It’s early, I know, but that’s the way we do it around here. 🙂

Great coloring work by Lise, and as always outstanding inking by Bernt. AMAZING achievement by Hedvig Häggman-Sund who drew ALL the material inside the album (you’re up for a good treat, dear readers)!

What’s funny about these Christmas Album Covers is that you draw them very early on in the year, even as early as January. This has to do with ads in the Christmas Magazine Catalogue (Jultidningskatalogen) which is being passed around by brave youngsters all over the country as we speak. It feels a bit weird coming back from Christmas and New Year’s holiday, and the first thing you do is drawing a Christmas motif cover with snow and Santa hats and stuff…

I’m not sure when the album will be available in stores, but a bit closer to Christmas than now, I guess. 🙂
