Nice! I´ve been reading BAMSE my whole life, and I´m not planning to stop that any time soon! You´re such an awesome person and an amazing artist, lending your talent to bring joy to other people 🙂
Sorry for the praising, I just had to, uh, tell someone 😛
Wow, thanks a million Tob! Very much appreciated! 🙂
I got the last issue of BAMSE for this year, and I noticed that the first chapter “BAMSE och det magiska ljuset” was drawn by you. I really enjoyed it, you draw expressions on the BAMSE characters like nobody else, and by that you boost the excitement of the story you help telling, not to mention your natural skills in the arts of art (sounds cheesy okay xD)
I took the liberty of browsing through your(this) site the other day, and I noticed that a lot of my favorite chapters as a kid was drawn by you, I especially remember Hulle Hårding and his companions 🙂
To end this little post I have to say it was very intresting looking at the “step-by-step” pictures you´ve posted for some of the comics you´ve done, thank you! It is really helpful for a beginner artist like myself!
Hi, Tob!
Thank you so much for your kind words. They are very encouraging! I try to be sensitive when I interpret scripts, trying to think of the characters as real persons and not merely cartoons, choosing expressions and poses appropriate for their personalities. Not that I always succeed, but at least I try. I think this is important for the reading/viewing experience of the story.
I believe that readers generally do notice the difference from inspired and noninspired storytelling. They might or might not be aware of it, but they will at least feel it, especially children. In this case the difference between comic book artists working with standard expressions versus those who have a serious/sensitive approach to their material. Depending on quality the reader/viewer will be enchanted or just entertained.
I hate when people say “well, it’s just for kids anyway”. NO, IT IS NOT. If it’s for kids it has to be twice as good, twice as ambitious and twice as sensitive. Adults, producers, people in ties etc. rarely recognize the difference. It makes me very happy to learn that you’re one of those who do.
I’m also happy that you remember Hulle Hårding. That story was special for me. Hulle and his companions were the first “fully developed charachters” I designed for Bamse. The first exhibition I was ever invited to in Malmö featured artwork from Hulle Hårding. I think Olof Siverbo’s story deserved a more technically advanced artist than me at the time. It was only like my third or fourth Bamse story. Anyway, I think Hulle is an interesting character, since he’s not afraid when Bamse throws him up a tree. Unfortunately he converts to the good side during his first story, so his “function” expires straight away. Probably that’s why you haven’t seen him again except in backgrounds, in crowds etc. In a way, he’s become the new “Tax-Tusse”, if you recall the dog who’s in the habit of showing up here and there in various settings.
If I inspired you to make art, I’ll keep my head high above my shoulders all day. Never stop drawing, Tob!
