Popeye Christmas Calendar

Jimmy Wallin is a good friend and respected artist colleague. We used to share studio space in Seriestudion in Malmö. Jimmy has had the good taste to 1) start a brand new Popeye Comic Strip, and 2) to gather some friends and colleagues to make a Popeye Christmas Calendar.

The latter will consist of 24 ULTRA HIP Swedish comic artists’ personal interpretations of characters from the Popeye legacy. One artist/one Popeye character a day until christmas. The first torch runner is none other than Jonas Darnell, creator of Herman Hedning and one of Sweden’s most successful cartoonists.

Frasse jd

Jonas chose J.Wellington Wimpy (Frasse), Popeye’s faithful hamburger eating friend, who were considered “too intellectual” for the animated series. If you like Popeye, make sure not to miss coming back to this great Popeye blog on a daily basis until christmas and check out the cool fan art. Yours truly will be represented in there somewhere with a super extraordinarily magnificent interpretation of…

More masks!

Guess what? I’ve got a patron! Her name is Emma Agering. She bought the Buster Keaton mask I made for the comics festival in Malmö last year.

Emma wanted two more masks, and in a weak moment I said yes. That was like January. Then poor Emma had to wait and wait and wait. When she framed the Keaton mask, put it on her wall next to two LARGE empty spaces, photographed it and mms:ed it to me, that’s probably when I got my thumb out and sat down to finally do the work.

These are A1 drawings, a mixture of ink and 4B pencil. Hurtful for the back to draw that large, but the three of them will make quite an impact together.

It was a while ago since I did caricatures. They aren’t that distorted perhaps, but at least they are exaggerated, and I guess that’s what caricature is about. Can you see who they are?

Thank you Emma and Helen for wanting these masks! Can’t wait to come and see them IRL!

CELEBRATING THE DUCK! (Norwegian style)

This year Donald Duck turned 75, believe it or not. A group of Norwegian fans decided to celebrate the duck by arranging a festival and an exhibition in Oslo called Celebrating the Duck. They invited cartoonists from around the world to interpret Donald as the 75 year old man he is today. The response was so good that they decided to extend the exhibition into 2010 and invite more cartoonists to join. I was very honored to be one of those cartoonists. At the moment we’re around 50 cartoonists included in the exhibition, among them some of my heroes like Bud Grace and Freddy Milton. Below is my contribution. If you’re in Norway next year, keep an eye out for Celebrating the Duck (Norwegian style)!
